The model whisperer

NEW YORK CITY - This is a guy that a number of men would gladly switch day jobs with for a few hours. After all, most of the stunning women featured in Sports Illustrated or on the Victoria's Secret catwalk have one thing in common: Justin Gelband, nicknamed 'The Model Whisperer.'
The personal trainer from New Jersey sculpts the bodies of over twenty top models in New York City. Yes, gentlemen, he let me into one of his training sessions.
"We all go to Justin," is what you heard backstage at the Victoria's Secret fashion show last month. The girls seemed to swear by him, saying he helped them get their nearly perfect physiques.
On a chilly December morning, the elevator doors open onto a private gym on Fifth Avenue near 14th street. It's the same gym where Quebec UFC star Georges St-Pierre trains when he's in the Big Apple.
And it's where Gelband performs his magic on the likes of Australian model Miranda Kerr, British model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and U.S. model Lily Aldridge.
Now, sprawled on an exercise mat, is Sports Illustrated model and girlfriend to Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine, Anne Vyalitsyna. She's finishing up a workout session, her face covered in sweat.
As I speak with Gelband, she comes over, hugs him, plants a kiss on his cheek, tosses a fur coat over her shoulders and heads out the door.
"I'm very close to these girls, they are my best friends," says the 37-year-old trainer. So close in fact, that he sometimes gets uncomfortable when he sees their photo spreads in magazines.
"When they are not wearing much, it's embarrassing. They're like family," he says.
Just like mortals, models also have their insecurities.
"Listen, they are born beautiful but that doesn't mean they don't feel fat. I see it every day," maintains the man who was in charge of preparing eight girls for the Victoria's Secret show in November.
"Every single one of these girls is insecure. The number one insecurity is they think they are never good enough."
Models need to be trained differently from other clients because the standards are different.
"Inner thighs are probably the number one concern in the business," says Gelband. "Everyone talks constantly about the gap between the girls' legs."
His success, he says, is not only due to the variety and diversity of his training methods, but also in knowing what exercises to avoid.
"I don't want to take away anything from the style of my competitors, but I don't do lunges, jumps, crazy weights and dance moves - these girls can't afford to bulk," he says. "They are supposed to look like models."
And it certainly sounds like he's proud of his results.
"When I started this job in New York five years ago, I said to myself: 'I will break the trend and bring sexy back on the runway,'" he says.
He explains that the high fashion androgynous look created models who deny themselves a balanced diet, smoke like chimneys, and in some cases, take prescription drugs like Adderall or OxyContin to suppress their appetite.
"The pressure on them to be very, very, very skinny is constant. I'm fortunate because all the girls I train are Victoria's Secret and Sports Illustrated models."
Justin got his start training model Angela Lindvall.
"She had just given birth to her second child and had to lose 20 lbs in three months for a fashion show," he says.
She did, and from there his skills spread through the fashion world by word of mouth.
There was Bridget Hall and Canadian supermodel Coco Rocha. In 2007, Miranda Kerr came to see him to add curves to her tomboy frame.
"They wanted her to gain five to 10 pounds to look more voluptuous," says Justin.
And what does his girlfriend think of all this?
"I'm lucky to have a woman who is comfortable with who she is, but I have to say for a long time, the dating was really hard. Every woman was comparing themselves with the girls!"

British Fashion Awards 2010: Phoebe Philo wins Designer of the Year 2010

British Fashion Awards 2010: Phoebe Philo wins Designer of the Year 2010: Phoebe Philo leads 'ladies night' at the British Fashion Awards 2010 as she, Lara Stone, Alexa Chung and Naomi Campbell are honoured.

Phoebe Philo, British Designer of the Year 2010

Phoebe Philo, who has been hailed as the 'Queen of the New Minimalism', won the Designer of the Year 2010 title at the British Fashion Awards in London tonight.

Alexa Chung, the television presenter, received the British Style award,as voted for by the public; she wore an a-line Chanel dress

The young English designer is the creative director of Céline, the French ready-to-wear brand she has turned into one of the world's most sought-after luxury labels, since her appointment two years ago.

Supermodel, Naomi Campbell, who received a Special Recognition trophy to mark her 25 year-career

Philo, 37, is arguably one of the most influential movers and shakers in modern ready-to-wear, and her approach to design has had a huge impact on the way women dress as we enter the second decade of the 21st century. A Hollywood A-list favourite, her customers include Katie Holmes, Victoria Beckham, Kate Bosworth, Leighton Meester, and Juliette Binoche.
Philo graduated from the London fashion college, Central Saint Martins, in 1996, and her first job was as Stella McCartney's design assistant for the then late 1990's revival of the Paris label, Chloé. Philo went on to succeed McCartney as creative director, in 2001, when the Beatles' daughter left to launch her own name brand.

Dutch model, Lara Stone, was named ‘Model of the Year’; she wore 'head to toe' Calvin Klein

Under Philo's direction, Chloé became the passport to the Noughties expression of super-cool. High-waisted jeans, babydoll dresses, wooden-wedge shoes, military jackets, broderie anglaise and 'It' bags were all revived by the young designer and were the essential keystones of every stylish celebrity's wardrobe.
In January, 2006, Philo resigned in order to spend more time with her husband and children, only to be enticed back into the fashion spotlight in 2008 by Bernard Arnault, the president of LVMH, which owns Céline, together with a stable of fashion thoroughbreds including Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Kenzo, Pucci and Fendi.
Quietly, but determinedly, Philo has wasted no time in applying her Midas touch to Céline and her introduction of a lean, clean, uncluttered silhouette, devoid of fantasy inspiration, is the contemporary antithesis of vintage, bling or anything remotely tribal.
Philo led a ''ladies'night'' charge in one of the strongest female showings since the British Fashion Awards were established in 1974. The gap-toothed Dutch model, Lara Stone, recently married to the British comedian David Walliams, was named 'Model of the Year'. Alexa Chung, the television presenter, received the British Style award, and the supermodel, Naomi Campbell, received a Special Recognition trophy to mark her 25 year-career. In addition, Mulberry, whose creative director is another British designer, Emma Hill, took the Designer Brand title, and Burberry received a special award for Digital Innovation.
Other awards included: the Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator to Lady Gaga's stylist, Nicola Formichetti; Menswear - Patrick Grant of E.Tautz; Accessories - Nicholas Kirkwood; Emerging Talent Ready-to-Wear - Meadham Kirchhoff; Emerging Talent Accessories - Husam El Odeh.
Alexander Lee McQueen received a posthumous award for Outstanding Achievement in Fashion Design.
The British prime minister's wife Samantha Cameron was the surprise guest of honour at the British Fashion Awards gala at the Savoy Hotel tonight. She was attending in her new capacity as a Fashion Ambassador for the British Fashion Council. She opened the awards evening by announcing the posthumous award for Outstanding Achievement to the late Alexander Lee McQueen. The award was accepted by his successor, Sarah Burton, who worked alongside McQueen for 15 years. Mrs Cameron wore a long, midnight silk faille V-neck, cap-sleeved, belted gown, by the London-based designer, Osman Yousefzada.
Other celebrity guests included Daisy Lowe, wearing Elie Saab; Kelly Brook in a Suzie Turner corset gown; Alexa Chung in cream A-line Chanel; Lara Stone in 'head to toe' Calvin Klein; Twiggy in a jacket from Per Una at Marks and Spencer and Mad Men-style skirt; Yasmin Le Bon in Christopher Kane; Ella Harris, the granddaughter of Richard Harris, in a black sequin Kate Moss for Topshop dress; Emma Roberts, the neice of Julia Roberts, in a blue and black lace micro-mini by Julien Macdonald; Thandie Newton in Peter Pilotto; and Daphne Guinness in a silver lamé gown she made herself, accessorized with a silver tulle scarf that "used to be a skirt", and her own diamonds - "of course, darling". Phoebe Philo wore a navy strapless jumpsuit, and modernist cuffs on each wrist, from

Mismo Cardholder

Cardholders are arguably an important supplement to a man’s wallet. While I prefer to stuff them into my zipup or flap (depending on which I use for the day), others will appreciate something more permanent. “The Mismo Cardholder is small, but perfectly formed, with enough slots for all your cards, and leather edging to add resilience. This showcases Mismo’s expertise brilliantly and is an incredible, every day essential.” End has them.

Fashion News Roundup: Crystal Renn’s Dance Moves, Underwater Fashion Show, and the New J. Crew

Renn Again: Model of the moment Crystal Renn continues to buzz about the internet. This time, she is looking light as a feather dancing around in nothing but a VPL bodysuit. The dance routine was for a photo shoot by Skye Parrott for The Block, a new Canadian fashion magazine. Crystal actually has some pretty impressive moves. Perhaps dancing is part of her new exercise routine? {Ford Models Blog}
Unlikely Pair: Jake Davis of Jake Davis Test Shots recently designed two pairs of men’s shoes for Sebago’s Nexus Project. While there is nothing particularly feminine about the footwear, Jake chose a female subject to advertise them. Gorgeous model Rachel Ballinger (who you might recognize from, um, the Urban Outfitters website) moves gracefully atop a New York City rooftop in Jake’s designs. We’ve never seen someone pull off an American flag and boat shoes so well. {Jake Davis Screen Tests}Under the Sea: In Seoul this weekend, models performed some version of synchronized swimming in an underwater fashion show to showcase the designs of Park Sul-Nyeo. The event marked the launch of a new Korean department store. We’re awe-struck not only by the fact that these models were evidently able to hold their breath for minutes at a time, but also by how pretty these dresses looked under water. {Daily Mail}
The Hair Situation: You might remember that on a recent episode of Jersey Shore, Vinny finally found someone who could cut (or tape-up, whatever that means) his thick, Italian hair. It turns out Vinny, Pauly D, Ronnie and the Situation are not the only notables who’ve had the pleasure of visiting Miami’s Platinum Boyz Barbers. {The Moment}
New Crew: The new J. Crew Men’s Shop on Madison Avenue just opened it it looks pretty impressive. The store is full of reclaimed materials and boasts, in addition to J. Crew menswear, extended suiting and special items by Benson and Clegg, Timex, Alden, Persol, Rogue’s Gallery, Barbour and more. There’s even a basement filled with vintage treasures. {Racked}

Schick Intuition Launches Limited-Edition Razors

Schick Intuition Plus limited-edition fresh and girly razors. Courtesy PhotoSummer can be hard on a girl's legs. From frequent shavings to nicks and cuts, our gams have seen better days. So when we stopped by a Schick event at New York's The Standard Grill, we were in desperate need of some leg-soothing news. First off, we learned that 81% of all women desire sexy, smooth, shaved legs. "What the heck does the other 20% want?" interjected fellow beauty writer Andrea Lavinthal."Well -- hairy legs are a form of birth control," replied Matt Rader, senior brand manager for Schick Intuition Plus. (He was joking. Kind of.)But if you're in that 81%, Schick has some new goodies to help you maintain your smooth this summer.Now through September, the brand is launching a limited-edition set of three Intuition Plus razors in fresh, girly designs. Each hand-held razor boasts four blades and a surrounding moisturizing solid made with shea butter, vitamin E and aloe that we found really did make a difference in the shower.The shades are also customized according to different skin type needs.The hot pink is replenishing with a delicious pomegranate scent (admittedly our favorite of the trio), while the light pink contains advanced moisturization perfect for more mature skin. The light blue is specially blended for sensitive skin. Once September passes, you'll no longer be able to cop the designs -- but your legs won't be left high and dry. You'll still be able to purchase razor refills with the different moisturizing solid choices. And come winter, your legs won't have to double as another form of contraception either.Show off your silky, smooth legs in a pair of cropped pants for your body type.

J.Crew Gives in to Internet Outcry, Switches Out Hairy Legs Tights on Model

Last Friday, someone on the internet noticed that the model at the top of J.Crew’s women’s shoe page online looked like she had really hairy legs. Initially folks thought that it was a photoshop prank. But how very un-J.Crew! The real reason was that the model was simply wearing a pair of the brand’s lace tights that ($22.50), in the “fawn” color, ended up making their models’ legs look more hairy than haute. Or, like an actual fawn’s legs.
The weekend was enough time for the “J.Crew Hairy Leg Tights” to become something of an internet meme and today the Daily Mail is reporting the story with the headline, “Somebody get the girl a razor! Trendy tights that appear to make legs look HAIRY take internet by storm!”
So, in what seems to be an effort to quell the “internet storm” that has been brewing over the tights, J.Crew has switched out the lace tights in “fawn” for a pair of black patterned tights that are, unquestionably, tights.

Unlikely Pair: Jake Davis of Jake Davis Test Shots recently designed two pairs of men’s shoes for Sebago’s Nexus Project. While there is nothing particularly feminine about the footwear, Jake chose a female subject to advertise them. Gorgeous model Rachel Ballinger (who you might recognize from, um, the Urban Outfitters website) moves gracefully atop a New York City rooftop in Jake’s designs. We’ve never seen someone pull off an American flag and boat shoes so well. {Jake Davis Screen Tests}Under the Sea: In Seoul this weekend, models performed some version of synchronized swimming in an underwater fashion show to showcase the designs of Park Sul-Nyeo. The event marked the launch of a new Korean department store. We’re awe-struck not only by the fact that these models were evidently able to hold their breath for minutes at a time, but also by how pretty these dresses looked under water. {Daily Mail}
The Hair Situation: You might remember that on a recent episode of Jersey Shore, Vinny finally found someone who could cut (or tape-up, whatever that means) his thick, Italian hair. It turns out Vinny, Pauly D, Ronnie and the Situation are not the only notables who’ve had the pleasure of visiting Miami’s Platinum Boyz Barbers. {The Moment}
New Crew: The new J. Crew Men’s Shop on Madison Avenue just opened it it looks pretty impressive. The store is full of reclaimed materials and boasts, in addition to J. Crew menswear, extended suiting and special items by Benson and Clegg, Timex, Alden, Persol, Rogue’s Gallery, Barbour and more. There’s even a basement filled with vintage treasures. {Racked}

Missoni for San Pellegrino Limited Edition Bottles

0 comments

Our brothers HS give coverage to this interesting by Missoni on some San Pellegrino water bottles. “By now a fashion brand getting together with a water brand is not entirely new anymore. We have seen Evian work with many designers over the years. Now Italian brand San Pellegrino is also getting into the game and presents a collaboration with Italian fashion house Missoni. The lables feature the Missoni branding and the bottle also comes in a special sleeve, designed by the brand.”

0 comments
